Produce Buying Company (PBC) a subsidiary of Ghana Cocoa Board and the single largest buyer of Cocoa for the domestic market is poised to maximize its revenue through increased Shea nut production according to the Managing Director, Anthony Osei Boakye.
PBC during the 2007/2008 financial year posted a significant growth of profit before tax of 660.60% from GH˘ 0.388million to GH˘ 2.95million.
The Company’s Shea nut operations are currently base in the Brong-Ahafo, Ashanti and the three Northern regions with a few commercial farms in the country. Ghana exports more than 50,000 tonnes of Shea nuts kernels each year, this figure represents a third of West Africa’s total Shea nut exports of 150,000 tonnes. Brazil spends over US$80million annually on Shea butter imports and hopes to depend largely on the country’s products which are of high quality.
The products are used in edible cooking oils and also used around the world as skin care lotions or moisturizing cream and other cosmetics.
